Mohan Bhagwat, the leader of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), stated on Friday that it is the duty of every citizen to contribute to the construction and improvement of the nation, ultimately safeguarding their own interests.
During a book launch event in Nagpur, Bhagwat remarked, "It is our responsibility to build and enhance our country, and in doing so, we protect our own interests. A nation that performs well is secure and earns respect globally."
Historical Context of RSS
Reflecting on the origins of the RSS, Bhagwat noted that Dr. Keshav Hedgewar founded the organization in Nagpur due to the existing spirit of selfless service and social awareness in the city.
He added, "While there are many across the country who take pride in Hindutva and call for unity among Hindus, I believe that an organization like the RSS could only have emerged in Nagpur. The spirit of sacrifice and social commitment was already present here, which aided Dr. Hedgewar in establishing the organization."
RSS's Role and Legacy
Bhagwat emphasized that the RSS serves the entire nation and the Hindu community. He acknowledged that Nagpur holds a special place in the hearts of its volunteers but does not claim any special status.
He also highlighted that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's efforts to achieve 'Swarajya' were not for personal gain but were driven by the principles of "God, religion, and nation."
Inspiration from Shivaji Maharaj
According to Bhagwat, when Shivaji Maharaj initiated the establishment of Swarajya, he gathered his friends not for personal reasons but for a greater cause. His spirit of unity empowered the people, and as long as his ideals inspired society, that era's history reflected progress and development.
He noted that Shivaji Maharaj's vision influenced rulers and freedom fighters across the country, even encouraging the revolt of 1857.
Bhagwat pointed out that the British systematically attempted to erase those inspiring Indian symbols that united the people and strengthened their spirit of resistance.
Learning from the Past
He concluded by stating, "We need to learn from our past about how individuals selflessly struggled for the welfare of society." He asserted, "Our history holds enough power to make India a land of peace and prosperity, capable of contributing to the world."
